LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15, 2011 – Ford Mustang – the icon of American performance and style – gets even more street swagger with a new design and a list of smart features that signal even more technology in the popular pony car.

“The new Mustang is the perfect example of continuing to build on excellence. It takes the greatness of the 5.0-liter and V6 and pushes the refinement to the next level,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “The car has been spot-on functionally and now we’re adding more features and technology to further improve the driver’s experience.”

More aggressive design

The new model Mustang, which goes on sale in spring 2012, offers a more aggressive design with a significantly more prominent grille. A more powerful splitter adds to that appearance. Functional heat extractors on the hood of the GT were specifically placed and designed to help move hot air out of the engine compartment and cool the engine.

“We are delivering a more distinctive and emotional design presence that celebrates the total performance of Mustang,” said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. “This latest Mustang design is very respectful of its heritage while continuing to look forward with a more powerful and modern look.”

Video: 2011 Ford GT500 spanks last years model by nine seconds at VIR

We know firsthand that both the 2011 Ford Mustang V6 and GT aren’t just plenty quick – they’re downright scary fast compared to their predecessors. It should follow, that the king of the heap 2011 GT500 should be similarly faster than the 2010 model. Let’s just go ahead and call that one an understatement. Ford just dropped a tasty video on the interwebs showing the car lapping one of our favorite tracks – Virginia International Speedway.

Ford’s engineers had it in their minds that the new aluminum block with its 120-pound weight savings should help the car click off the 4.1-mile Grand West portion of the track about three seconds quicker than the outgoing car. Thing is, the 2011 GT500 managed to lap the track in 2:58.5 – a full nine seconds faster than last year’s version.

For the 2011 model year, the legendary Ford Mustang once again flexes its muscles with three all-new, state-of-the-art powertrains delivering marked gains in both fuel economy and power.

The 2011 Mustang coupe and convertible arrive with a 305-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6 engine with Ford’s new advanced engine valvetrain technology – Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) – as standard equipment. Performance-minded buyers opting for the Mustang GT are treated to an all-new 5.0-liter, 32-valve V-8 with Ti-VCT, good for 412 horsepower. And the no-compromises Shelby GT500 gets a Ford GT-based aluminum block for its 5.4-liter supercharged V-8, leading to lighter weight and 550 horsepower.

“These three new engines represent a quantum leap in rounding out a world-class Mustang powertrain portfolio,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “Each represents Ford’s commitment to use technology to deliver the performance and fun-to-drive factor customers demand, while continuously improving fuel economy.”
